While most network TV series have had to have projects sidelined due to current events, this meant little chance for TV shows to film on a regular schedule. However, that does not mean that there is nothing new to watch this upcoming winter.

The December schedule has been reserved for a few show premieres and meant for a midseason cliffhanger in the past decade. This year will be a complete difference from last year’s usual model of how things go. TV series planning on being released later in 2021 will be released early to maintain morale and give the public more options as everyone remains inside during this season. The streaming services have become more of a way to cope and process the past year. As a result, services have exploded but increased expectations of what is to come.

The new products that are releasing for consumption will not only allow minds to ease but also be a way of getting caught up with information that is released this year. Perhaps in the future of streaming will have the foresight to come up with new systems. Only time will tell, but for now, pass the time with these releases:

Big Mouth (Netflix, December 4th)

Growing up is the weirdest thing for anyone to go through. Big Mouth embodies this concept but adds trauma, taboo, and adult humor into the mix. Based on the trailer for season 4, the audience can expect anxiety to focus on this quirky cartoon. Packed with innuendos, chaos, and puberty monster shenanigans, the voices Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, and Jordan Peele will keep you entertained. Created, written, and produced by Family Guy writer Andrew Goldberg and the showrunners, this comic will have you in tears.

Big Mouth

Brassic (Hulu, December 4th)

Being an adult is something many of us will admit: it’s expensive. And the show ‘Brassic’ paints a picture of how being an adult, broke and with no prospects, is reality but with much-needed humor of it all. Set to premiere on Hulu, this show follows Vinny and his pals for so much more crazy antics with a dose of mischief and reality. While they may not always have the best intentions as petty thieves, their friendship is as thick as thieves. Based in a fictional northern England town known as Hawley, get ready for the antics and touches of humor schemed cooked up with this season. Created by showrunner Joe Gilgun and Danny Brocklehurst, this comedy will have you in tears through mood and raw emotion.

Selena: The Series (Netflix, December 4th)

Over twenty years ago, before Beyonce, there was Selena. Specifically, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was one of the pioneers in breaking the glass ceiling as the most popular idol during her time. Now, a complete story on her life—written and permitted by her family—is hitting the streaming deck. Her story takes the place of her entire experience of what is publicly documented, photographed, and told by those who knew most. This docuseries will give you a glimpse into the star that was gone too soon from the world.

It has only been one season since HBO Max released Euphoria, and this show has taken everyone by storm.
The Stand (CBS All Access, December 17th)

Based on the 1978 book by Steven King, this series takes place in the distant but dystopian future filled with magic: good and terror. Set in a time where the world was decimated by a plague that swept through most of the world, a handful of survivors remain as humanity’s last hope. Despite this, good and evil have manifested into elemental forces that can mean the eventual showdown: good vs. evil. On the “good” side sits a handful of survivors and the wisdom of an elder known as Mother Abigail, played by Whoopi Goldberg. On the side of evil sits a man consumed by the nightmares and manifestations of evil whose goal is to use his powers to stop Mother Abigail and the survivors from finding peace. This limited series comes highly anticipated against the current event climate. Developed and directed by Josh Boone, the award-winning director of ‘The Fault In Our Stars,’ this series will do more than strike fear but tung at your heartstrings.

Letterkenny (Hulu, December 26th)

Set in a Canadian fictional rural town, the once small series on YouTube will release its latest season. Written by the original content creators Keeso and Jacob Tierney, Letterkenny returns to the streaming service. A town full of interesting characters that also challenge rural media portrays this series always brings a laugh. Each character gets a special uniqueness to the screen that makes each episode unique for anyone who watched the series. Neither one name is the focus the way most TV series follow, which makes Letterkenny so unique. Whether it is the out of town hockey team coming in and making a mess or the scheming failed attempts of winning back a high school sweetheart, this series will keep you on your toes for the entire time.

Nowadays millions of people from different cultures and walks of life are united by one thing — watching series. Shows can grab your attention for the whole night and you won’t be able to sleep until the end. And what can be better than spending autumn evenings with close people, pizza and new series? Or what is more exhausting than waiting and counting days before the start of a new season of the favorite show?

We want to make your September cozy and comfortable, and bring some new emotions and topics to discuss with friends at the same time. And maybe even leave you sleepless for a couple of weekends!

There is a list of 15 new and current episodes on your respective calendars that need to be noted now:

“Raised by Wolves” (HBO Max, September 3)

For over 50 years, following the first breakdown of several episodes and a pilot who never took part in 2013, Ridley Scott returns triumphantly to TV with the first two episodes. Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim play two androids that keep people alive in a distant colony. The creator of the 2013 Denis Villeneuve film, Aaron Guzikowski, has also produced “Prisoners.”

“Away” (Netflix, September 4)

Fascination by the TV with space travel is the latest entry, which follows the first human-pilot mission to Mars by an international group of interplanetary explorers. The five-person teams are played by Hilary Swank, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu, and Mark Ivanir, leading the group behind Earth by Josh Charles. The showcase “The path” Jessica Goldberg serves here in the same capacity, with Jason Katims on behalf of executive producer (“Friday night lights” and “Parenthood”).

If you want to see a high-flying superhero team in theaters, you’ll still have to wait. So why not embrace the subversive, anti-imperial scuzzfest that flips ideas of heroism on their head? In addition to meeting all the characters who didn’t get lasered to death in Season 1, in this season you will be able to enjoy the presence of Aya Cash on screen, as she is a new addition to the show’s team of “supes.”

“Power Book II: Ghost” (Starz, September 6)

Starz’s juggernaut ratings get her first (and certainly not the last) series of spinoffs. However, it is not untrue to consider this series as a continuation of the sorts, as about three days after the “Power” finale events. Courtney A. Kemp is also the original series creator. Naturi Naughton and Michael Rainey Jr., rejoined as the “Book II,” are the “Power” casting members, Returning as Tasha and Tariq. The Method Man and Mary J. Blige will also appear in the ever-expanding universe of TV as new additions.

Dennis Kelly is one of the creators of this ambitious medium-hybrid theatre on the people of a mystical, remote island, a television vet, and Tony writer. The first is to focus on Sam, who arrives on the island, in three parts, with people already living there. The last section stars Naomie Harris as Helen, who will follow a somewhat different pattern later on the island. The middle section is a one-off, live theatre performance directed at the first week of October by co-creator Felix Barrett to complement the overwhelming intrigue.

This look at Mildred Ratched, the iconic nurse of the famous One Flyover Cuckoo’s Nest, is the latest series in the increasing Netflix collection from Ryan Murphy, which took place in one of the most strangely-selected regulations of recent times. In Jon Jon Briones, Cynthia Nixon, Finn Wittrock, and Corey Stoll, which Louise Fletcher made famous on-screen, Sarah Paulson will join the cast. The co-creator Ian Brennan of “Glee” and “Scream Queens” is also a film writer.

This year the fall televised slate will not be known, but we won’t have at least one new soapy Fox theatre this year. This latest look at the top class’s excess focuses on a Southern family, whose fortunes are based on televangelism. In this American version of the series from 2016-17 in New Zealand, Kim Cattrall and Gerald McRaney will be the family heads. The new version of the series was developed and directed by Director Tate Taylor, “The Help.”

An “unless you know, the better” approach is used in this original “Utopia” range, released in the United Kingdom from 2013-14, so let’s say this American update follows a group of fans of comics who think they’ve trodden into something far more significant than their shared fandom. This adaptation’s casting will finally be led by Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Desmin Borges, and John Cusack to the screens after the initial HBO project has begun. The executive producer and showrunner of this series were Gillian Flynn, whose last effort to bring a known British property into a new Chicago environment led to one of the lowest-rated films in the previous decade.

Mermaids have always been a source of fascination for us – from the whimsical and beautiful Princess Ariel in the animated Disney film to the terrifying creatures that the Harry Potter franchise showed us, it’s clear that these mythical beings have captivated audiences for years.

Without a doubt, this inexplicable interest in mermaids is the reason why Siren is a resounding success.

ANOTHER TYPE OF CREATURES

A fantasy drama series that premiered in 2018 on the network, Freeform, Siren follows the tale – pun intended – of a small coastal town called Bristol Cove, situated in Washington. Famous for its urban legends involving the mysterious fabled creatures of the deep sea, the townspeople suddenly find themselves caught up in a murderous rampage as a mermaid attempts to seek revenge against local military forces who had abducted her beloved sister.

Rather than Disney’s rather childish and innocent interpretation of mermaids, the show harkens back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, whose mythologies told of exquisite-looking women who lived underneath the sea – homicidal maniacs singing beautiful songs that served to lure sailors and men to their deaths.

Ryn, the protagonist of Siren, is much like these mermaids of bygone days, albeit with human legs rather than a fishtail. She wreaks havoc upon the town of Bristol Cove, sparing no one as she attempts to find answers to her sister’s kidnapping. Along for the ride are the marine biologists Ben and Maddie, both of whom reflect our limitless fascination with creatures who look just like us yet are wholly different.

The fantastical elements of Siren, as well as its new and radical depiction of mermaids, make it a series worth watching. Rather than mythological creatures, the show presents mermaids as humans, going through a wide range of emotions and forming deep connections with their loved ones.

ARE MERMAIDS DIFFERENT FROM PEOPLE?

However, Siren never fails to note exactly how and why mermaids are different from human beings; their supernatural powers and otherworldly strength make them unstoppable and this, combined with the bonds that they form with their fellow merpeople, spells tragedy for us.

To add to that, Eline Powell’s performance as the murderous Ryn is fascinating to watch – sort of like Game of Thrones meets The Little Mermaid but set in present times. The sheer brutality of her rampage, when juxtaposed with her love for her sister, allows the audience to simultaneously feel fascinated and repulsed by her.

Viewers are notorious for never rooting for creatures who murder human beings in cold blood but everything about Siren – from its storyline to the phenomenal writing and Powell’s gripping acting – holds merpeople in a more sympathetic light, even if they do kill innocent residents.

In the end, the audience is forced to feel both compassion and revulsion for mermaids. More than that, though, the show asks them to consider whether the terror that the merpeople subjected the residents of Bristol Cove was warranted, especially since they themselves had been victimized by humans.

A fantastical drama that brings forth a whole slew of philosophical questions? Well, sign us up!

It is one of Rotten Tomatoes’ most popular (mini) series to date, with a positive review score of 98 percent and an audience acceptance score of 93 percent, according to Business Insider.

The Netflix docuseries, which exposes animal abuse (especially of cats in private zoos) is so rich in nuances that it would take many articles to analyze everything we see on screen. Tiger King began filming in 2014 and ended in 2019, and its premiere was on March 20th of this year.

What is it about?

Joe Exotic is the main character of the series. His real name is Joseph Allen Schreibvogel, although he modified it to Joseph Maldonado-Passage in honor of his partners.

Joe ran the Great Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma. He has a great fondness for guns, country music, and athletic youth. At the beginning of the series, he appears to be an animal lover, but over time, his self-centeredness will lead him to make a series of bad decisions.

The parodic tone changes color very fast when we meet Carole Baskin. Carole is Joe’s nemesis, and she has spent years reporting Joe Exotic for animal abuse with the support of the PETA organization. However, Baskin also has her own animal reserve, Big Cat Rescue, located in Tampa, Florida, where she resides.

Why you should be watching it

Unlike other docuseries available on Netflix, like Wild Wild Country or Making a Murderer—which makes use of refined audiovisual techniques, such as the music of the composer Gustavo Santaolalla, historical recreation, and artistic plans—Rebbeca Chalkin and Eric Gode are fully aware of the particular story in their hands, so they add songs that were composed by Joe Exotic himself in different chapters, which highlights the egocentricity of the main character and reminds us of mockumentaries like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007).

The secondary characters round out the plot of the series as they are quite peculiar. For example, we meet other zoo owners, like Bhagavan Antle, who recruits beautiful women to exploit them, have them run the business with him, and live with them (as if he was running a cult). His actual name is Doc Antle, but the name was changed to give an air of Hindu spirituality to his company, The Institute for Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.). Doc Antle has been such a high-profile wildlife personality for decades.

He still works at his zoo. Everyone can chat with Doc Antle about their pet cats or any other topics on Payphone X. You can even ask him to record a shout out, and if you’re lucky, the tigers may also be there!

Repercussions

The notoriety of the series has set the eyes of Congress on a law to protect these wild animals. They never imagined that, in order to achieve this, they needed to show a documentary stranger than fiction. The producers of the show said, “If we had presented it to Hollywood, they would have rejected it as not credible.”

That feeling of implausibility is further multiplied in the perspectives of those who live outside the borders of the United States and are unaware of some of its peculiar laws, such as the one that allows having a tiger as a pet, taking it out of its natural habitat, and putting it in your backyard by simply taking out a license for $40, and that gives rise to all this bizarre history.

Will Black Mirror return to Netflix? We don’t know, but we’ll tell you why it should.

What is Black Mirror?

Black Mirror is a series that, since its premiere, has been a hit with all audiences around the world, and it definitely deserves such attention since it taught us a new way to stay glued to the screen. The novelty of watching a fictional series that talks about what seems to be normal issues but which hides a sad and dark reality full of parallels with the real world is that it’s frightening.

The creators ventured to explore a “not so distant future,” making predictions of issues that we are dealing with today, such as what will happen when technology completely dominates us or what awaits us as we allow ourselves to be seduced by the advances of the future. All this is combined with careful staging and actors who work impeccably.

Just a year ago, in June 2019, Netflix released three episodes of the series for its fifth season. Some of them, like the one starring Miley Cyrus and an innovative interactive episode, have gone on to fatten the ranks of the iconic series.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, fans of the series are wondering when the much-anticipated sixth season premieres.

So… what about the next season?

Charlie Brooker, the creator of the Black Mirror series spoke about the anticipated new season. But despite fans’ high anticipations, Charlie Brooker simply thinks that this is not the time.

During an interview with Radio Times, the screenwriter and producer expressed that, although he would like to premiere more episodes of the series, he is not quite sure if “viewers would be prepared to digest a new season right now.”

The fact that we are living a situation that seems to come straight out of a dystopian science fiction novel is precisely what makes the moment unsuitable for a series like Black Mirror.

“I don’t know if we are in the mood to see a show about societies falling apart, so I’m not working on it.”

Why should season six happen?

Because of its style

Black Mirror’s format takes a step forward and surprises us chapter after chapter. Each of its episodes shows the dangers of technology in society from different perspectives with cruel originality. The creators ventured to showcase a dystopian future that might be, well, not so distant.

The series is short

Black Mirror’s seasons feature three to six self-closing episodes of about 40 minutes to one hour and can be compared to other TV series that drag on and force us to watch seven seasons of twelve episodes of roughly one hour each, which honestly seems like an eternity.

The narrative is intense

Black Mirror episodes have no joint storyline continuity. That’s why they are enjoyed both individually and in a binge-watching marathon. Obviously, all the series’ stories are full of tension, anguish, doubts, fear, and reflection.

It has necessary criticism

We are hooked on mobile devices, computers, tablets, and/or televisions. Black Mirror is that mirror which we look at obsessively and compulsively every day.

The truth is that we don’t know how or when Black Mirror will return, but we want cultural stress and impatience to devour the tragedy of our generation in new doses of wild dystopia. At the end of the fifth season, and given the statements of Charlie Brooker, we do not know the series will return, but we will be vigilant and waiting.

In the meantime, it’s possible to chat with actors starring in Black Mirror. Just find them on Payphone X.

When the Netflix original, Thirteen Reasons Why, hit the legendary streaming site back in 2017, it was met with a great deal of controversy. Based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher, the teen drama followed a high school student named Clay Jensen who, along with the rest of his school, is attempting to deal with the aftermath of their classmate’s suicide.

The show, produced by film industry veteran Brian Yorkey and Hollywood celebrity Selena Gomez, depicted a wide range of issues that today’s youth often find themselves dealing with, such as drug addiction, sexual assault, bullying, homophobia, and domestic violence. Additionally, it also sought to portray larger societal issues at hand, including police brutality and school shootings.

Naturally, this blatant display of graphic content drew a ton of criticism; health professionals and educators claimed that the show led to the increase of incidents of self-harm and suicide threats among adolescents while Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, Headspace, was forced to issue a warning due to the escalating number of calls they were getting following the show’s release.

However, this widespread condemnation has distracted the general public from the good things about Thirteen Reasons Why, such as its courage to tackle head-on issues that are normally considered taboo as well as its finesse at handling the depiction of such themes on screen.

At the end of the day, Thirteen Reasons Why is a must-watch, especially for adolescents and teenagers struggling to find their place in the world today.

Here are three reasons why everyone should watch this show at least once:

It Shows How the Little Things Matter

“Chaos theory isn’t really about chaos,” says Hannah Baker at the beginning of the series. “It’s about how a tiny change in a system can affect everything.” These two sentences were the crux for the entire show.

Thirteen Reasons Why is a story of how a teenage girl commits suicide after a series of seemingly small incidents pushed her over the edge. Hannah’s story shows that, even the simple things we do, those that we tend to overlook, often play a huge role in the lives of others.

In an era when social media is king, teenagers are prone to underestimating the power of their actions as well as their consequences. However, Thirteen Reasons Why encourages viewers to pay closer attention to the things they do and the things they say, lest they end up unwittingly hurting others.

It Raises Awareness for “Taboo” Issues

Teenagers and adolescents today are largely concerned about issues such as sexual assault, suicide, and drug addiction; however, these are all considered taboo subjects by modern society. This means that they’re oftentimes swept under the rug and talked about only in hushed and shameful whispers.

However, Thirteen Reasons Why dispels that misconception, shining a light on these issues and forcing conversations and dialogues about them to happen. As a society, we need to understand that ignoring these problems won’t make them go away. Rather, we should all strive to understand them so we can provide the proper guidance and support to the youth.

It Focuses on the Gray Areas in Life

When we think about bullying, we tend to consider it as black and white; there’s the bullied and the bully. The same goes for other issues; the abused and the abuser, the addict and the dealer, the victim and the perpetrator.

But life isn’t black and white, and it’s time that we all realize that.

Thirteen Reasons Why takes a more nuanced look at these issues, exhibiting its gray areas and the complexities that surround them. For instance, viewers are introduced to a popular jock named Justin who distributes compromising photos of Hannah. Our knee-jerk reaction is to censure him, write him off as a bully and an evil jerk, the villain of the show.

However, we also get to see how Justin is abused by his alcoholic mother, oftentimes leaving him homeless and vulnerable at an age when a safe home is essential above all else.

As much as we hate to admit it, Justin is as much a victim as he is a victimizer, and the same can be said about all the other people whom Hannah encounters that eventually make it onto her cassette tapes.

That’s the beauty of Thirteen Reasons Why; it isn’t afraid to show how incredibly complicated and nuanced real life is. There aren’t any good guys and bad guys; there are only humans who screw up and make mistakes yet still strive to do their best at the end of the day.

Overall, Thirteen Reasons Why is a phenomenal and radical show that doesn’t back down from controversies. We live in a world plagued with issues, and it’s time that the media does their part in bringing these problems to light.

If you enjoy watching this series, there’s great news for you. Several of its stars are available for direct contact on Payphone X. You can text them, call them, or book a personalized video. Whatever method you prefer, this is an exciting opportunity to talk with a talented actor who is a part of Thirteen Reasons Why.
