Will Black Mirror return to Netflix? We don’t know, but we’ll tell you why it should.

What is Black Mirror?

Black Mirror is a series that, since its premiere, has been a hit with all audiences around the world, and it definitely deserves such attention since it taught us a new way to stay glued to the screen. The novelty of watching a fictional series that talks about what seems to be normal issues but which hides a sad and dark reality full of parallels with the real world is that it’s frightening.

The creators ventured to explore a “not so distant future,” making predictions of issues that we are dealing with today, such as what will happen when technology completely dominates us or what awaits us as we allow ourselves to be seduced by the advances of the future. All this is combined with careful staging and actors who work impeccably.

Just a year ago, in June 2019, Netflix released three episodes of the series for its fifth season. Some of them, like the one starring Miley Cyrus and an innovative interactive episode, have gone on to fatten the ranks of the iconic series.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, fans of the series are wondering when the much-anticipated sixth season premieres.

So… what about the next season?

Charlie Brooker, the creator of the Black Mirror series spoke about the anticipated new season. But despite fans’ high anticipations, Charlie Brooker simply thinks that this is not the time.

During an interview with Radio Times, the screenwriter and producer expressed that, although he would like to premiere more episodes of the series, he is not quite sure if “viewers would be prepared to digest a new season right now.”

The fact that we are living a situation that seems to come straight out of a dystopian science fiction novel is precisely what makes the moment unsuitable for a series like Black Mirror.

“I don’t know if we are in the mood to see a show about societies falling apart, so I’m not working on it.”

Why should season six happen?

Because of its style

Black Mirror’s format takes a step forward and surprises us chapter after chapter. Each of its episodes shows the dangers of technology in society from different perspectives with cruel originality. The creators ventured to showcase a dystopian future that might be, well, not so distant.

The series is short

Black Mirror’s seasons feature three to six self-closing episodes of about 40 minutes to one hour and can be compared to other TV series that drag on and force us to watch seven seasons of twelve episodes of roughly one hour each, which honestly seems like an eternity.

The narrative is intense

Black Mirror episodes have no joint storyline continuity. That’s why they are enjoyed both individually and in a binge-watching marathon. Obviously, all the series’ stories are full of tension, anguish, doubts, fear, and reflection.

It has necessary criticism

We are hooked on mobile devices, computers, tablets, and/or televisions. Black Mirror is that mirror which we look at obsessively and compulsively every day.

The truth is that we don’t know how or when Black Mirror will return, but we want cultural stress and impatience to devour the tragedy of our generation in new doses of wild dystopia. At the end of the fifth season, and given the statements of Charlie Brooker, we do not know the series will return, but we will be vigilant and waiting.

In the meantime, it’s possible to chat with actors starring in Black Mirror. Just find them on Payphone X.
